Graphic & Web Design
About Sarah
Epictetus said “No great thing is created suddenly.” and the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies sang “Nothing worth having comes without some sort of fight”—I believe we are constantly learning.
It's hard to say exactly where I got started. I joined the school newspaper in junior high. I've liked art since I was little. I grew up with a computer in the house. Since those early days, I've collected experiences that have contributed to my interest in artful communication.
In college I looked for a communications program that had all my interests and covered new media and communications studies but at that time the local acedemic world couldn't catch up with emerging technology. I went to college originally as a marketing major but switched to English with a concentration in writing and mass communications. During this time I was able to travel abroad for a semester to Florence, Italy and see first hand many famous works of art at the galleries in Italy and London. (On a side note, this is also where I started dating my now-husband.) Senior year, I found an internship on my own time at an art education publisher and began working there after graduation in a very independent role where I worked closely with the graphic designer, advertising manager, editors, and outside vendors.
A year after graduation, I returned to school at night to learn more about web design. Since then I have worked as a web content manager and designer, volunteered my professional skills, studied and followed other communication professionals and have done occassional freelance projects.
The things I enjoy best about work are: learning about new people and their business and creating a design that connects with their business goals and identity; the creative process—getting into the zone and discovering new ways to visually problem solve; and fine-tuning messaging using everything I've learned from creative writing and editing.
Personality
I am...
- ...Sarah with an "H".
- ... a Virgo, born the Chinese year of the Dog. These apparently mean I'm practical, sensible, focused, discriminating, critical, responsible, reliable, and honest.
- ... the INTJ Myers-Brigg personality type. This means I'm independent and analytical and can come across as reserved.
- ... a Creator and a Persuader. This means I'm creative and like constantly learning something new. Being a persuader means I'm witty and competitive.
